In the modern world we are redefining what it is to be an individual. Cultures and life that was experienced inter-woven as communities & belonging has transformed into more individual experiences. Part of ourselves that found belonging through the rich & diverse experiences of the community are now suppressed or experienced in a transactional model, usually reduced through monetary exchanges. With a purely individual focus comes great freedom and also loneliness. Are we truly free in that sense, when parts of ourselves imprison in emotional and/or psychological suffering? This is a freedom without sovereignty.
Solitude is the experience of individualism that is free and yet sees oneself distinctly not separate from everything else – the universe 1Ref. Loneliness and longing finds a home in solitude as an inter-dependent experience of life (not co-dependent). What we are learning is to become self sovereign so that we can show up with all of our parts in the world. We are learning to develop a sense of culture within ourselves. A culture-en-solo invites us to belong to the universe as a sovereign self, one who contains a sovereign image of the universe in its expanse and richness. This is the aspect of culture visualized as a fabric that brings us in connection with the universe as an indistinct entity – where every form and every boundary merges into a one continuous single whole, with awareness at the center. Here we are the creator and the creation of this experience that is us.
